The One Rule I Never Break

I have plenty of small rules – about punctuality, about discretion, about never checking my phone at the table. But there’s one rule above all the others, the one I will not bend for anyone or anything. It’s simple, and it has quietly shaped everything.

The rule: I never override my own gut

If something feels wrong, I stop. No matter how good it looks on paper, no matter the apology or the explanation, if my instinct says no, the answer is no. I have walked away from situations I couldn’t even fully explain, simply because something underneath them didn’t sit right. I have never once regretted it.

Why the gut is smarter than the script

Instinct isn’t magic – it’s experience moving faster than conscious thought. After enough evenings, your body notices patterns your mind hasn’t named yet: a tone, a tension, a small thing that’s off. Learning to trust that quiet signal, instead of talking myself out of it, was the most important lesson of all.

The cost of ignoring it

The few times early on when I overrode my gut – to be polite, to avoid awkwardness, to not seem difficult – were the times I most wished I hadn’t. Nothing catastrophic, but enough to teach me. Politeness is never worth more than your own sense of safety.

Why one firm rule makes everything lighter

Here’s the surprising part: having one non-negotiable rule doesn’t make me rigid – it makes me relaxed. Because I know exactly where my hard line is, I can be open, warm and spontaneous about everything else. The firmness in one place is what creates freedom everywhere else.

The takeaway

Everyone should have one rule they never break – a line drawn before the moment arrives, so you don’t have to decide under pressure. Mine is to trust my gut, always. Find yours, hold it without apology, and you’ll move through the world a great deal more freely.
